Interview

Ilya Popov: “Krasnodar is in my heart”

At the start of the MELBET training camp, the center gave the club's press service his first interview as a player of Lokomotiv Kuban.
What are your first impressions of your new team?
I enjoy everything! The weather, the people who live here, the way I was greeted. The other day I picked up my daughter and my wife from the airport in Gelendzhik, we looked at the sea, the nature. We bought peaches for 80 rubles per kilo. So far I really, really enjoy everything! Krasnodar is in my heart already.
And what can you say about basketball-related things here?
The managers are collecting a pretty strong team. It's really nice to train in an arena like this. I've played here as a guest many times and always enjoyed it, even though it was hard to play.
Why was it hard?
Because of the incredible support. Even when there aren't many spectators, you can hear them very well. But when the stands are full, it really puts great pressure on Lokomotiv's opponents. Sometimes it even becomes scary, but that's what we love sports for.
In April, at the end of the previous regular season, you played a great game here as part of Uralmash – 26 points, not a single miss, 40 efficiency points…
Of course, I remember. Good that others remember too. There were a lot of shouting at me from the stands that evening. What a thrill, I love that. Now I'll try to play this way for Lokomotiv.
How did you react to the news that Jeremiah Martin is also moving from Uralmash to Lokomotiv?
I was glad. He is a very cool and positive guy. Let's see how things go in Krasnodar.
What do you think Loko will fight for in the new season?
We will strive for victory in every game, give our best, and then we will see which way the basketball god looks.
