Vsevolod Ishchenko: “Sometimes, under pressure, you play with greater focus”

The Lokomotiv Kuban guard played the entire 4th quarter against Zenit while sitting on 4 fouls, yet that didn't stop him from delivering a composed and impactful performance during the decisive moments. He finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists, helping the team secure an 85:81 victory and narrow the series deficit to 1–2.
Congratulations on a victory that was tough in every respect. What can you say about it?
Every game in these playoffs has been tough for us. Today was no exception: we were neck and neck with our opponents throughout the game—sometimes we’d pull slightly ahead, then they would, then it would be level again. It’s likely hard for both teams; so much time has passed since the start of the season, and players have accumulated minor injuries, so it really comes down to character and the will to win. We had that drive today. We don’t want to just finish the season without anything to show for it—we want a medal. So we are putting in every effort to secure 3rd place.
Zenit has just lost a semifinal series when they were up by two wins and needed just one more victory. Do you think Loko can repeat what UNICS did?
They have a different coach now. We know the kind of coach Rostislav Vergun is; he doesn't let anyone slack off. Everyone is kept strictly in line, so to speak. They got a bit of a boost after their disappointing semifinal loss and started the 3rd-place series with real intensity—because when you lose the way they did to UNICS, the will to bounce back intensifies significantly. But Loko no longer has any margin for error. Sometimes, under pressure, you play differently—with greater focus. We’ll see how we perform in Game 4, but we’ll certainly give it our all.
What kind of emotions do you feel stepping onto the court knowing that if things go wrong today, the season could be over?
We lost two away games in clutch. That’s disappointing, but we need to bounce back. The basketball we’re playing in this series might not be the kind everyone wants to see, but in terms of character, I think we looked pretty good today; we just need to weather this tough spell once again so that we have something to look back on later.
Your parents were in the stands today. Did that give you any extra motivation?
For sure, it's great. It did provide some extra motivation—after all, how can I lose with my parents watching.
What can you say about the fans' support today?
It’s an incredible feeling to see a full arena; there’s nothing like the moment when the crowd’s reaction is so loud that you can’t hear yourself or your teammates after a great play. It really drives us forward. A huge thanks to our fans—we look forward to seeing you again on June 9th.
