Kulagin’s 18 pts was not enough to beat the champions

Loko lost to CSKA in a VTB United League game 76:93

Lokomotiv Kuban tried to lead the game from the start but didn’t manage to hold it for long. Cory Higgins got 3/3 field goals in 3.5 minutes and got replaced by Nando De Colo. Him and Sergio Rodriguez had a few easy shots that led to a 14 point margin at the end of the first quarter with 18:32 on the scoreboard.

Second quarter shortened the margin with some help from Trevor Lacey (6 points) and JaJuan Johnson and Vitaly Fridzon who scored 4 points each. The period was won 21:18 but the 2 digit gap was still on the board.

After the half time triples from Wright and Fridzon made it seem like the comeback was close. The arena was buzzing witnessing a 48:52 score in the third quarter. But by the end of it De Colo scored 30 points and an 11 point margin got the champions a big lead once again.

Dmitry Kulagin tried to heat up the game with 9 points in the last 5 minutes but it was not enough. The game ended 76:93 with CSKA winning the match.

18 points from Kulagin made him the top scorer in Loko adding 4 assists and 3 rebound. Johnson got the same 18 points with 6 rebounds. Fridzon scored 12 points and McLean and Wright finished with 9 points each.

Vlada Jovanovic, the PBC Lokomotiv Kuban acting head coach

We had a good game today but when you play against CSKA you can't have any guarantees. The got into the 14 point lead and stayed like that until the end of the game. We tried to stay in the game but didn't play well enough against De Colo.

Trevor Lacey, PBC Lokomotiv Kuban guard

CSKA is a good team, they took advantage of our mistakes. We lost but we know what to work on after this loss. The atmosphere was buzzing in the stands. We are sorry we didn't finish and win the game for the fans. We always see it and hope they come for the next home game and with the same energy.

Dimitris Itoudis, PBC CSKA head coach

I would like to congratulate my team. We were the better team tonight. We are having a very tight schedule but we managed to make it. We had a great start both in defence and offense. We had 8 turnovers in the first quarter but after that there were only 3 losses. Loko is always a tough opponent for sure and I wish them luck in EuroCup. And the atmosphere was great as always here.
